若いときに東北タイの貧しい農村で一年間を過ごしました。そこで起きるさまざまな出来事から、「これはいったい何なんだ？」と考えたのが私の研究の出発点です。
My scholarly works are based on my experience of staying in a rural community of the northeastern Thailand when I was young. ‘Think from the grassroots’ is my motto of research.

２年生のゼミでは、日本の農業と農村について勉強します。学生がグループで農家を訪ね、お話しをうかがって農業の現場から学びます。３年生は発展途上国のかかえる諸問題を学習します。夏休みにはタイに校外実習に行き、農村にホームステイするなどして、自分の目と肌で日本とは異なった経済、社会、文化を理解します。４年生では、卒論に取り組みます。自分の漠然とした関心を具体的な問いに変えて、その解き方を考え、オンリーワンの作品を作ります。
The topics of my course is “agriculture, rural society, and economic development”. The students learn about the rural sector in Japan through textbooks and field visits. They also study economic and social development in developing countries. A field study trip to Thailand is organized during the summer course. The students are encouraged to concentrate on graduation study during their last two semesters.

校外実習の紹介

・途上国の農村住民が、生活を向上させるためにどのような組織をどのようにして作り出しているのか（地域社会開発論、住民組織論）。
・農産物がどのような市場と組織の制度のもとに取引されるのか（一次産品論）。
・途上国の人々が自分らの声を政治や政策に反映させるために、どのような集合行為をおこなうのか（社会運動論）。
