高校生の頃にアフリカ地域について幅広く学びたいと思い、大学ではアフリカ地域文化を専攻しました。卒業後は金融機関に就職し、一通り社会の荒波に揉まれたあと、再び大学院でアフリカの経済や開発について学び直そうと舵を切りました。以来、「アフリカの毒」にやられたのか、アフリカは私を捉えて離さない研究対象であり続けています。

現在は、アフリカ経済について、企業や事業者の活動に着目して研究しています。これまで主にケニアやモーリシャスをフィールドとして、小規模零細企業、インフォーマル・セクターの事業者、企業の資金調達、産業発展などについて研究してきました。近年は、資金や制度にさまざまな制約がある中で、事業者が利用可能な資源や人々との関係を活用しながら、どのように事業を存続・発展させているのかに関心を持っています。

When I was in high school, I became interested in learning about Africa from a broad perspective, which led me to major in African Studies at university. After graduation, I worked for a financial institution before deciding to return to graduate school to study African economies and development. Somewhere along the way, I seem to have fallen under Africa’s spell. Since then, Africa has remained a subject of research that fascinates me and refuses to let me go.

My current research focuses on African economies, particularly on firms and business operators. My fieldwork has primarily been conducted in Kenya and Mauritius, where I have studied micro and small enterprises, informal-sector businesses, access to finance, and industrial development. More recently, I have become particularly interested in how entrepreneurs in Africa sustain and develop their businesses under various financial and institutional constraints by drawing on the resources available to them and the relationships they have built with others.

サハラ以南アフリカを対象地域として、主に社会・経済を切り口に現代のアフリカを理解することを目指します。アフリカと一口に言っても、各国の経済状況はもちろん、自然環境、歴史、文化、政治に至るまで、その内情は実に多様です。ゼミでは、文献を読むことやデータを分析することに加えて、実際にアフリカの人びとの生活に触れ、自分の目で見て考え、問いを立てることを大切にしています。近年では、ゼミ生が自らアフリカを訪れ、現地での経験を研究や学びにつなげています。また、アフリカ地域での校外実習も実施します。こうした学びを通して、多様なアフリカの姿に向き合い、自ら問いを立て、それを解き明かしていくことに意欲を持った学生を歓迎します。

This seminar aims to deepen students’ understanding of contemporary Sub-Saharan Africa, primarily from social and economic perspectives. Africa is remarkably diverse, not only in terms of economic conditions but also in its natural environments, histories, cultures, and politics.In this seminar, in addition to reading academic literature and analyzing data, we place great importance on students learning about the everyday lives of people in Africa, seeing things firsthand, thinking critically about what they observe, and developing their own research questions. In recent years, students have traveled to Africa on their own initiative and incorporated their experiences in the field into their research and learning. We also offer field study opportunities in Africa.We welcome students who are eager to engage with the diversity of Africa, develop their own research questions, and explore them in depth.

現在は主にケニアとモーリシャスをフィールドとして、零細企業やインフォーマルな事業者が、資金や制度などのさまざまな制約のもとで、どのように利用可能な資源を動員し、事業を存続・発展させているのかを研究しています。また、こうした研究を通して、アフリカの社会と経済への理解を深めるとともに、日本をはじめとする国際社会による協力やさまざまな開発政策が、アフリカの社会経済にどのような影響を及ぼしうるのかについても関心をもっています。

My current research focuses primarily on Kenya and Mauritius, examining how microenterprises and informal-sector business operators mobilize the resources available to them to sustain and develop their businesses under various financial and institutional constraints.Through this research, I seek to deepen my understanding of African societies and economies. I am also interested in how international cooperation and various development policies, including those of Japan, may affect African societies and economies.
