私はカリフォルニア州のとある先住民保留地では「Kele（キーレ）」と呼ばれています。ヨク―ト語で「雲を呼ぶ人」という意味です。その名の通り、私が戻ると乾燥したこの地に必ず雨が降るのだそうです。いつも、びしょ濡れになりながら、人々の「語り」を集めています。
I am called “Kele” in a certain Indigenous community in California. In Yokut language, it means “the person who calls the clouds.” As the name suggests, when I return, it will always rain in their dry land. I’m always getting soaked and collecting people’s “narratives.”

16才のとき、はじめてアメリカ先住民の居住地を訪れました。まず驚いたのが「貧困」でした。しかし、次に衝撃だったのが、この事実を「誰も教えてくれなかった」ことです。それどころか、それまでに私が手にできた本や学校の授業では、まったく「異なる事実」が語られていたのです。みずから「学びたい」という気持ち強くもったきっかけです。あなたも、今、心にもっている漠然とした「違和感」を大切にしてください。それが、明治学院大学での学びの原動力になるはずです。
At the age of 16, I first visited a Native American reservation. One thing that surprised me was “poverty.” However, the next and the most shocking thing was that “no one told me” this fact. On the contrary, the books and school classes I read and took by then, completely told me “different facts.” It was a strong opportunity for me to “want to learn” by myself. Please cherish the vague “uncomfortability” that you have in your mind. That should be the driving force for learning at Meiji Gakuin University.

現代を生きる私たちが直面する様々な問題、例えば、排除と統合、多文化社会と人種・民族、家族とジェンダーといったテーマについて、アメリカ合衆国の事例をもとに学びます。こうしたテーマがどのような歴史的文脈で「発見」され、議論されてきたのか、生きやすい社会をつくるためにはどのような「思考の転換」が必要なのか、そのために今の私たちは何ができるのか。ゼミや校外実習、卒業論文研究の中で考え続けます。
Based on the case studies of the United States, we will learn about the various problems we face today, such as exclusion and integration, multicultural societies and races/ethnicities, and families and gender. We will also learn in what historical context these themes have been “discovered” and discussed, what kind of “mind change” is necessary for our future society, and what we should do for them. We will continue to think those topics through seminars, off campus field studies, and independent research for graduation thesis.

校外実習の紹介

アメリカの入植植民地主義と先住民社会について関心があります。アメリカは「移民の国」といわれていますが、元来、その地には多様な先住民社会が広がっていました。あまり知られていませんが、現在でもアメリカには570以上の異なる先住民族が暮しています。その多くが、過去400年にわたる入植植民地政策の影響により、現在でも貧困下、周縁化された状態にあります。私がもっとも関心を持つのが、アメリカという大国の中で、こうした先住民族が個々に「自治権」を持ち、独自の政治、経済、社会形態（自治）を維持していることです。統合と排除をめぐる先住民と国家の歴史的な関係性に加えて、部族自治の根底に流れる先住民の思想や信仰と価値観、貧困下を生きる諸民族の苦闘と戦略などについて学んでいます。
My research topic is American Settler Colonialism and its influence on the Indigenous People. There was originally a diverse indigenous society spread in this so-called “country of Immigrants,” which still has more than 570 different indigenous groups. Many are still in poverty and marginalized due to the effects of settler colonialism over the last 400 years. What I am most interested in is that these indigenous nations have their own autonomy and maintain their own political, economic and cultural sovereignty in the United States. In addition to the historical relationship between indigenous peoples and the colonizers over integration and exclusion, I am learning about the ideas, beliefs and values of indigenous peoples that underlie tribal autonomy, and the struggles and strategies of Indigenous communities living in poverty in the 21st century.
