The late Sayuri Fujii and her father’s art: Bringing together Japan and Taiwan

As far as I know, there is only one former pupil of mine who has already passed away. She was Sayuri Fujii, who graduated from Meiji Gakuin University’s Faculty of International Studies in 2007 and worked as a Japanese language teacher in Taiwan, a country she grew to love. Tragically, however, she passed away from breast cancer in 2016 at the so, so young age of 32. From that tragedy, a miracle was born. After her death, her father Katsuyuki, a professional painter, went to Taiwan again and again and made a series of nostalgic bokusai (ink-wash) paintings of his daughter’s favourite places, based on her diaries. These wonderful artworks are gathered together in an exhibition now being held at the Taiwan Cultural Centre in Tokyo. The location is very close to Toranomon Station on the Ginza Line and Uchisaiwaicho Station on the Mita Line, and JR Shimbashi Station is a 10-minute walk away. Don’t miss it! The exhibition was the front page splash on the evening edition of the Mainichi Newspaper on March 15, the day it opened. There has already been an exhibition in Taiwan, a book of the works has been published, and a film is even being made. Sayuri is becoming an angel of friendship between Taiwan and Japan. (Tom Gill)

Exhibition details: Runs until April 14. Open 10 am to 5 pm (except final day, closes at 3 pm) Closed in Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Katsuyuki Fujii will be there on April 13 and 14.

私が知っている限り、既に亡くなった元教え子は一人のみ。藤井小百合です。2007年明治学院大学国際学部を卒業した後台湾で日本語講師として活躍しまして、台湾大好きでした。しかし悲劇的に2016年32歳の若さで乳癌で他界してしまった。その悲劇から奇跡が生まれました。亡くなった後で画家であるお父さんは再三台湾に行って、娘のお気に入りの場所を墨彩の絵にしました。その展示会は本日から台湾文化センターに行われています。素晴らしい絵ばかりです。場所は銀座線虎ノ門駅、三田線内幸町駅にすぐ近くです。JR新橋駅も徒歩10分程度。お見逃しなく！初日の3月15日、デカデカと毎日新聞夕刊に記事が出ました。一面トップです。既に台湾に展示会があって、作品集が出版されていて、映画まで作成中。小百合ちゃんは台日友好の天使になりつつある。（トム・ギル）
