明治学院大学の国際キャリア学科（KC）を選んだ理由は、単に英語を学ぶだけでなく、英語を実践的に活用しながら学びを深めたかったからです。
入学当初は正直なところ、社会課題への関心は薄かったのですが、1年次の「Introduction Seminar」で経済、政治、文化など幅広い分野の基礎を学ぶ中で、サステナビリティへの興味が徐々に広がっていきました。

2年次の夏からは1年間、オランダのマーストリヒト大学に留学し、Development Studies を専攻する中で、この分野の奥深さと魅力に惹かれました。3年次では経済学の学びを深め、それを自身の論文テーマに結び付けることができました。3年次の秋学期は就職活動やプロジェクトが重なり多忙でしたが、Aalto internationalでインターンとしてサステナビリティ関連の記事を執筆するなど、充実した日々を過ごすことができました。さらに、国連主催のMillennium Fellowshipのメンバーとして学内でイベントを企画・開催したことも、良い経験となりました。
卒業後は、オーストリアのウィーンの大学院に進学し、社会生態経済学を専攻する予定です。

Before coming to Japan, I spent the last year of my high school in California. I wanted to study in Asia for personal reasons but wasn’t sure if I would be able to find an English-taught undergraduate program in Japan. I was so happy to find an English medium program that had the courses that I was looking for. Besides, the tuition fees in Japan are very reasonable.

Joining the Department of Global and Transcultural Studies (GTS) has given me a new perspective on Japanese society. I like studying anthropology and my research focuses on exploring the deeper causes and effects of the stereotypes surrounding Asian males. Most importantly, even if you don’t speak Japanese, the Department of GTS teaches you how to take care of yourself and find your own opportunities.
Meiji Gakuin University offers opportunities to be an exchange student to study at universities around the world. This allows students to explore countries and places that interest them. I got the opportunity to study at University of New Mexico where I participated in several outdoor activities including hiking, camping, shooting, horseback riding, visiting churches.
I would like to be a professor in the future. I’ve been accepted by KU Leuven in Belgium to pursue my masters in anthropology. I wish to pursue my PhD after that.
Professors in the Department of GTS are extremely supportive, which made my four years at Meiji Gakuin University worthwhile. Professors here are much more than academic advisors; they become your life and spiritual mentors and help you discover and realize your dreams and goals, both in your studies and your life. They helped me figure out what I’m truly passionate about, both in academics and in my life.

I chose the Department of Global and Transcultural Studies at Meiji Gakuin University because it offered courses in Economics, Politics, Culture, and History – all taught in English.This allowed me to pursue my interests while improving my English proficiency,significantly enhancing my speaking and writing skills since my first year.

I have always been interested in Economics and Politics. Through various courses, I deepened my understanding and gained valuable insights into diverse cultures and their global impact. After graduating, I plan to pursue a master’s degree in Australia to deepen my knowledge of Economics and gain business skills, laying a strong foundation for my future career. Academic English classes offered by the Department of GTS have greatly improved my writing, reading, and speaking skills, which will be invaluable for my career. In addition, courses such as Behavioral Economics, Introduction to Economics, Labor Economics and Public Policy, and others have equipped me with essential insights into how economies function and evolve, thus improving my knowledge of economic principles and their practical applications.
If you are concerned about your English skills, don’t worry – professors in this department will do everything they can to support you, both in and out of class. Additionally, you can seek help from senior students in the International Lounge, where most KC and study-abroad students gather to talk or study together. Overall, the Department of Global and Transcultural Studies offers numerous opportunities to make your academic experience worthwhile and enriching, while also preparing you for your future career.

英語を学ぶだけではなく、英語で専門科目を学ぶというカリキュラムにとても魅力を感じ、国際キャリア学科に入学しました。
留学経験もなく、英語は大学受験レベルでしたので、まず英語に重点を置きました。その後は、経済学分野に注力しました。

恩師の研究や授業に対する熱意ある指導のおかげで、経済学から派生して簿記や租税の勉強に打ち込むようになりました。バイトや友人との旅行など、課外でもとても充実していました。また、大学院の入試準備と資格学習もしていました。院試は、研究の知識を入れる必要がありましたので、自身で相当程度学習をしました。全ての経験が、自信に繋がっています。
大学院では税法の研究をしており、好きが高じて会計事務所に就職しました。外資系ということもあり、様々な背景を持った人々そして世界中の方とやり取りをする機会があります。国際キャリアの「transcultural精神」が今に生きていると実感しています。
国際キャリア学科は、やりたいことができる素晴らしい環境が整っています。まだやりたいことが見つからない方は、自分が少しでも気になった勉強を突き進めてみてください。意外な所から自分の探求が始まり、それが将来に繋がると思います。

私は「将来英語を使ってバリバリ働くかっこいい女性になる」という目標を掲げていました。それまで一度も留学した経験がなく、英語が苦手な私でしたが、新しい環境に身を置くことで、今まで見ることがなかった景色を見たり、経験を得ることができると信じ国際キャリア学科に入学しました。

また、私は入学当初からサンフランシスコ州立大学のダブルディグリープログラムに参加することを目標にしていました。英語が苦手だった私でもアメリカの大学で現地の学生と肩を並べて勉強できるという体験をすることで、自分の自信に繋げたいと考えていたのです。
国際キャリア学科で過ごした初めの1年はとにかく英語での授業に慣れることに力を入れていました。英語に苦手意識があった私は、とにかく授業についていくことが精一杯でした。そこで、講義の後はオフィスアワーを活用して先生に質問したり、休み時間は英語が飛び交うラウンジで積極的に学生の輪の中に入っていきました。授業中に英語で講義を聴くことはもちろんですが、その他の時間にも英語に触れていることで徐々に自信がつき、授業中の発言やデスカッションにも積極的に参加することができるようになりました。
ダブルディグリープログラムに参加する前は、とにかく英語の勉強をしていましたが、サンフランシスコ州立大学では、映画を専攻したこともあり、ルームメイトと映画鑑賞をしてディスカッションしたり、実際に映画を作ってアメリカ国内の映画祭に応募したりしていました。映画を撮影するにあたり、さまざまな人を巻き込んでチームになり一つの作品を作りました。その時に感じた団結力の強さや達成感は忘れられません。それは私の人生に大きな影響力を与えた経験となりました。
「英語を使い、国際的な場で働く女性になる」ことが私の幼い時からの夢であり憧れでした。今の職場を選んだ理由は、私の夢が実現できる場所であることと、この職場ならきっと私はさらに成長できると感じたからです。
とても優秀な同期や先輩がいる中で、ひたむきにゴールに向かって自己研鑽に努め、サポートが必要なときは自発的に上司等に相談することを徹底していました。国際キャリア学科在学時の英語授業に対し悩み、もがいた経験が活かせていると感じます。
私が過去を振り返ったとき、今の自分に大きな影響を与えたのは大学での経験と出会った人々です。私は、幸い素敵な教授や学生に囲まれ、さまざまな楽しいプログラムを経験し、大学生活を充実して過ごすことができました。そのおかげで現在は、大学時代に描いていた「理想の将来の自分」になり、当時の理想像を超えた自分になれているなと感じます。みなさんにも、いつか自分が年齢を重ね、大学生活を振り返った時に、「大学時代に描いた理想の将来の自分」になれるように充実した学生生活を過ごしてほしいです。

Trier University（独）からの交換留学生

I graduated with a Bachelors in March 2023, with Computer Science as my major and Japanese Studies as my minor. I am currently pursuing my master’s in computer science, and I expect to graduate in March 2026. I have been an exchange student at Meiji Gakuin University since September 2024 and will stay until August 2025. I originally wanted to visit this university in 2020, but I couldn’t enter Japan due to travel restrictions during the pandemic.

I chose to study at Meiji Gakuin University because it offers a wide range of classes. Even as an exchange student, I found many courses that piqued my interest. There are many classes where you can learn about Japan, such as Japanese arts, culture, and society. I have taken classes such as Japanese Popular Culture, Japanese Society, Japanese Literature and Japanese Arts and Culture. Personally, I enjoyed the Japanese literature class about monsters and yokai.
The professors are invested in the students’ learning success, and they will help you as much as they can. The staff at the International Centre are also incredibly supportive and will assist you with any problems you may encounter. They also host many events where you can meet both Japanese and other exchange students.
Both the Shirokane and Yokohama campuses are modern and very clean. I think it is amazing that you can take classes at both campuses because it allows you to choose your courses flexibly based on your interests.
Studying at Meiji Gakuin University has been a wonderful experience where I have met amazing people and learned so much about Japan.

I enrolled in the Department of Global and Transcultural Studies mainly because of the variety of courses offered. When I first set foot in Japan, I was always curious about everything, and I was excited and prepared to learn anything. The department of GTS offered some economics classes—the ones I thought I would excel in—and courses in cultural studies, politics and sociology, which were the ones I was also interested in.

And I was not disappointed. In my four years of study here, I not only expanded my knowledge and fields of interest through various classes but also discovered what I really enjoyed and what I was good at.
Another reason I chose this department was for a global experience. I had previously lived in different countries, and I learned that being in a diverse and inclusive environment was crucial for self-development. The department of GTS offered this. I have met professors and students from all over the world, and they were generous and kind to me. I liked asking difficult questions, sometimes even challenging professors. Throughout the years, I have never been discouraged once. Outside of class, I liked meeting new friends from different backgrounds.
