Announcement from Yokohama City: Yokohama International Peace Lecture: “To the End of Our Lives: Catholic Priests on the Path Towards Hiroshima and Resurrection.”

A Public Lecture Announcement from the Yokohama International Affairs Bureau

In accordance with its ordinances for the promotion of international peace, Yokohama City implements various education activities related to this program. Among them, the City invites speakers in the field of international peace to give presentations at its annual Yokohama International Peace Lecture. The topic of this year is “To the End of Our Lives: Catholic Priests on the Path Towards Hiroshima and to Resurrection.”

The lecturer is Mr. Hashimoto Isao, a curator at the Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims. Mr. Hashimoto will offer his thoughts about peace and the transmission of peace to younger generations by introducing the experiences of foreign Catholic priests who strove to help others even though they, too, were victims of the nuclear bombing. (The lecture will be in Japanese.)

In addition, as representatives of Yokohama’s children, this year there will be presentations by elementary and middle school children who have been selected by the city to be “Peace Messengers.” These students make widespread appeals for the importance of international peace, and they will offer reports on their activities. (*These children were selected as recipients of the Mayor’s Award at the Yokohama Children’s’ International Speech Contest.)

We hope that college students with an interest in peace and other issues will join us and use the opportunity presented by Mr. Hashimoto’s lecture and the Messengers’ reports to reflect once again upon the importance of peace.
