UC Course Information
International Center (IC) oversees all matters related to student life, including the dormitory for UC students. Shortly after your arrival, IC staff will provide an orientation to living in Japan. Staff will help you establish a bank account, get you registered with Japanese immigration authorities, provide an orientation to the community and to university life, etc.
The Integrative Program Seminar (Meigaku UC Special Seminar)
Every term, UC students take a minimum of 21 UC quarter units, but most students take 24-27 UC quarter units. Among these courses, The Integrative Seminar (3 quarter units) with an independent study component is required. (Integrative refers to the integration of materials covered in other classes, daily living experiences, field trips, Japanese life and society, etc.) This is taught by the UC Director, and it must be taken for a letter grade; the P/NP grade option is not permitted.
Independent Study and Special Study Projects
Independent Study and field-work requires a professor's approval and UC-EAP review and approval. The units vary with each project, depending on the amount of time invested, the type of project, and the work done for evaluation–typically 2-3 UC quarter units. Please check with the UC−EAP advisor.
Independent Study Projects require a study proposal, the agreement of a standing member of the Meiji Gakuin faculty (not with a lecturer or adjunct), approval by the Meiji Gakuin/UC Program Committee, and finally, approval by UC-EAP.
Special Study Projects are available for students who need an additional unit of credit to satisfy home-university requirements. Credit may not be received from adjuncts, only standing members of the faculty.
Points to Remember:
Students who are absent from more than one-third of course meetings are ineligible for course credit.
The spring examination period is approximately from the middle of July to the end of the month. If your professor asks you to submit your paper to the Meiji Gakuin/UC office, the staff will only accept the paper on the due date. The same rules apply to the fall semester. Check with your professors about the fall examination period.
The Meiji Gakuin course registration deadline is mid-April for the spring semester and early October for the fall semester. Please note, this Meiji Gakuin cut-off date may differ from the date set for UC registration, so verify dates with the UC study director.
